Samsung cleared of charges of installing keyloggers on new laptops

A previouse post discussed how Samsung was being investigated for allegedly installing keylogger software on new laptops.  The investigation has concluded and has cleared Samsung of any wrongdoing.  Apparently a antivirus program mistakenly detected a Microsoft folder in the windows installation as a keylogger.

Google picks Kansas City over Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh made the finals in the Google sweepstakes but we came up second.  Google will be installing a fiber network in Kansas City in the upcoming year.  It promises speeds upwards to1000 times faster than current high-speed networks are today.  Google has been planning this for years and were scouting smaller cities to roll out the service.  It is believed that Google ultimately wants to take it national, and needed a large, but small city to test the service.  I tell you, the speed of that network alone would tempt me enough to move back within city limits again.  Check out the article on the Pittsburgh Post Gazette here.

Never trust a kid with a laptop

One of my frequent customers just dropped off a laptop that he purchased for his nephew.  This is the second time that I had to work on it since I sold it to him a couple of months ago.  The first repair was not even a repair, he simply crushed the pin inside the AC Adapter.  Simple fix, gone.  Now this one is more interesting.  He actually snapped the steel hinges that holds the LCD screen to the base of the laptop.  This is a first for me.  I'm trying to figure out how he could snap the steel hinges, yet the rest of the laptop is still in working condition, relatively undamaged.  The screen works, the laptop boots and operates, yet the screen is only attached to the base by the LCD cable that sends the picture from the base to the screen.  Hmmm.

51% of Americans now have a facebook profile

According to the upcoming report from Arbitron, Inc. and Edison Research, The Infinite Dial 2011: Navigating Digital Platforms, more than half of all Americans ages 12 and older are on Facebook. The study, fielded in January of 2011, indicates that 51% of all adults 12+ have profiles on this dominant site.

I previously reported on how Facebook is cited in 20% of all divorce cases, now it makes sense.  Half of us are on facebook, the other half is divorcing us for being there, lol.

Hard Drive Search Warrants, hmm....

An emerging issue of the day involves the increasing use of law enforcement in getting search warrants for your hard drive.  What are they looking for?  Of course it depends on what crime you are suspected in engaging in.  This fascinating article from Ars Technica dives into the issue.  As more and more of our lives are stored digitally, we really need to think about how to secure it is from prying eyes.  For the criminally inclined, they tend to leave stuff where we can find it, but for you honorable, law-abiding citizens, you can easily secure your data on your drives from anyone with programs such as TrueCrypt and the like.
