Try to remember your passwords

It is astonishing how many calls I get from people who need help in retrieving their passwords.  The story typically goes that they created a password for an account online and can no longer remember it.  It is even more frustrating that they cannot even remember what email account they used, thus making the password reset on sites meaningless.  Please, please, take a little time to remember your password, or at least the basics on how you created and managed it.  If I could retrieve it as easily as many think I can, then it is really isn't a good password or password system.  This is dedicated to my wife for the mayhem she created for me this evening.  :)

Video Pinner For Chrome Keep YouTube Videos In View As You Scroll Down The Comments

We've all been there - clicking on that YouTube link and then ending up getting caught up in clicking link after link from the suggestions and losing track of time over the next few hours. There are many reasons behind YouTube's massive success, but when speaking of the technical side of things, it’s the company’s highly optimized streaming and presentation that keeps users hooked to the service. That said, there are still some annoying quirks with YouTube that plague the deal for us die-hard YouTubers. One such problem is when you scroll the web page to read comments posted a video, it no longer remains in view as you scroll down. So, while you may read or reply to the comments, but you won’t be able to watch the video at the same time. Video Pinner is a Chrome extension that aims to fix this issue by pinning the video to the page so it remains in view even as you scroll down.

Firefox Add-On: Use your space bar to go to the next web page

Popular websites like Google, Yahoo and Business Insider split their results as well as certain articles into multiple pages. This technique has long been around and popular with webmasters, because it makes page loading faster since everything on an information-laden website doesn't have to be loaded in one go. You usually have to click a Next Page or More button to read the content on the proceeding webpage. Opera, however, has a built-in feature called ‘Fast Forward’ that automatically loads up the next page for you, so you don’t have to do it manually every time you reach the end. If you want to bring similar functionality to Firefox, try Space Next. As it’s name implies, the add-on enables you to load the next page upon reaching the bottom of an article or page and pressing the Space bar.

Clean up your browsers the easy way with Auslogics Browser Care

Auslogics-Browser-Care_Web-Windows-th

If you’re one of those people who install a ton of extensions, add-ons and toolbars on their browsers, you shouldn’t overlook the fact that too many of these can eventually slow down or even crash your web browser and hinder your browsing experience. While many of these extensions and add-ons can be quite useful, unwanted toolbars like the infamous one from Ask toolbar and Babylon usually come bundled with freeware and are unintentionally installed by users. And even besides their shady installation methods, getting rid of such toolbars can be a tedious task. Previously we’ve reviewed a few applications such as Avast Browser Cleanup and Toolbar Cleaner that are designed to rid your system of the aforementioned pesky toolbars. Auslogics Browser Care is yet another great tool that aims to mark its name in this genre by letting you get rid of unwanted add-ons and toolbars, reset your browser home page and search engine, and clean up temporary browser data. Even better, it supports Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer all in a single package.

Chrome Add-On: Open a webpage in a pop up window.

Although tabs are the most convenient way to deal with multiple webpages, sometimes we need to be able to view more than one website at the same time. For instance, there can be a scenario where one needs to compare and analyze two sets of data from different websites. Likewise, having a multiple web pages opened side by side on the same monitor helps increase your productivity, especially if you have a high resolution screen. While you can always use multiple browser windows for the purpose, how about making things even more convenient? If you want to snap a website over another, this handy Chrome extension called Picture In Picture Viewer can prove extremely useful. It lets you view multiple websites together by placing one of them in a popup window above the other. More details here.

How to spot a fake (person) online with BeehiveID

I know this may come as a shock, but: The Internet is a fakers paradise. Facebook estimates that roughly 7 percent of accounts—some 76 million—are phony. Twitter guesses 5 percent of its 200-million+ active users are bogus. (I’d lay money that both numbers are actually much higher.)

BeehiveID works by analyzing your social media accounts and assigning you a score, much like a credit score. The higher the number, the more likely you are a genuine person. You can look up your own score by visiting Beehive’s site and allowing it to connect to your Facebook account.

When I did it, I got the maximum score of 850. Turns out I’m a real boy after all. Who knew?

Beehive uses a number of techniques—including facial recognition and writing analysis—to parse thousands of data points about each person. Bots act differently online than real people, CEO Mary Haskett explained to me in a phone interview. Real people tend to have clusters of friends from both genders who live in the same town or work at the same place; fake accounts don’t. Real people tend to be more active than fakes and to write status updates and tweets in a consistent way. Real accounts also tend to produce a lot more data than bogus ones.
