Best place to get a discount on Apple computers....Apple.com

Yes, we all love our Macs or want to love one, but that sticker shock always seems to get in the way.  I frequently get the question, "Where can I get a Mac cheaper?"  The answer has been there the whole time, apple.com.  More precisely, there is a page where Apple sells refurbished computers at a discount, the problem is keeping track of the computers available and jumping on the one you want.  Problem solved!  Head over to Refurbme.com and it will help.  It is a site that keeps track of what refurbished Apple computers are available online.  You sign up, identify what computer you want, price range, specs and it will send you an email or text alert when a computer in your criteria is up on Apple.com.  All you have to do is stop what you are doing and go online and buy it!  Other than that, I can't help you get that Macbook Air any cheaper....sorry.

New Section on free online storage

Backup online.  Please.  Your computer and the external hard drive sitting next to it on your desk is not enough.  What happens when your recently divorced or ex mate decides to destroy them both or steal them?  What happens now?  You have to have a backup in the cloud.  The section I created now eliminates your one excuse for not doing it, being cheap.  Check out how you can store everything online for free.  Yes, you have to do a little work, just like the work I have to do when you don't backup and you call me to rescue your hard drive and the data locked on it!  Section is on the far right!

1/3 of Americans now own a tablet. Do you?

A third of American adults now own a tablet computer, double the number of a year ago, the Pew Research Center said Monday.

The survey found that 56% of households earning more than $75,000 have a tablet, making it the biggest category of device owners. Adults in the 35-44 make up the biggest tablet-owning age group (49%).

By contrast, smartphones are much more popular with younger adults. Those in the 18- to 34-year-old category own the most smartphones in the U.S., Pew said last week.

Pew interviewed 2,252 adults, age 18 and older, in April and May. A Pew survey in May 2010 found that just 3% of adults owned a tablet. The tablet-owning number jumped to 8% in May 2011 and to 18% in April 2012. Tablet ownership reached 34% in the latest survey.

Now your Comcast Wifi signal is community hotspot..

Comcast announced today that it will add a public Wi-Fi signal to private wireless routers. At no additional cost, the company’s Xfinity Wireless Gateway router devices will beam a public signal that will be accessible to any Comcast Xfinity customers. In effect, the addition will extend the company’s already 150,000-hotspot strong Xfinity Wi-Fi network by millions of users-cum-network nodes.

The additional signals will have no effect on current users’ Wi-Fi signals, and they will have the option to turn it off if they so choose (though the public hotspot will be the default setting). Current Xfinity users will be able access any of these hotspots by looking for the “xfinitywifi” signal and signing in using their username and passwords.

"WiFi is at the center of our strategy to offer our customers the best online experience, whether it’s the fastest WiFi experience in the home, or a fast and reliable WiFi environment outside the home," said Tom Nagel, Senior Vice President of Business Development, Comcast Cable. "WiFi is an important part of our strategy to be the place where customers connect all devices, anywhere and at any time."

As home ISPs face greater competition from wireless phone networks offering connectivity that is not location-specific, a larger public Wi-Fi system can be a powerful selling point for customers looking to navigate increasingly mobile lives.

Technology stinks when it is considered old...

Here I am, I need to find something to do with two old iPhones.  I know I should sell it to Gazelle, but have a feeling deep down that I might need it someday.  I also have an old Griffin Evolve (wireless iPhone Speakers), but this only works with the 1st and 2nd generation iPhone, so essentially worthless.  Although you can attach it to your TV to have wireless TV speakers.  Finally, my 1st generation Drobo is still going strong, but my Droboshare is dead.  Of course, it is no longer supported, so I am out of luck again.  So what do you do with dead technology?  Help!

Turn your spare iPhone into a video surveillance Camera

You might want to hold off selling that old iPhone to Gazelle for the moment.  If you have a spare iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad, you can set up a surveillance system.  You have several options available to you.  iCam ($5 -Android; IOS) is a bit pricey.  If you want to go the free route, try People Power Presence for IOS.  Simply set up an account, install on the old device and you are off and running.
