So you really want to surf the net safely? Sandbox it

So many people, so many virus infections.  What to do?  I think I will start recommending Sandboxie for some of my customers.  Opening your Internet Browser in a sandbox can rid so many users of those "accidental" infections (opening that strange email, downloading that pirated data, etc.).  Sandboxie opens your browser or any other program you want, in a sandbox.  Essentially, it is isolated from your system and only changes can be made on your direction.  So when you download that file, you can open it in the sandbox.  If it's malicious, simply exit the sandbox and everything in it disappears as well.  If the file is safe, simply direct the sandbox to release it to your computer as normal.  Sounds so simple, but for most novice users it may be confusing, but at this point, it may be necessary to educate many on this point.

Well if I'm too ugly, then take this virus and stick it....

Recently, the online web dating site beautifulpeople.com was hit with a virus attack.  Why, well it may have something to do with the recent decision to dump 30,000 members from the site because they were.....too ugly.  Yes, in order to join, you must submit a picture and the current members decide if you are beautiful enough to join.  Apparently, one of the rejects took it personally and struck back.    Good for you! (Disclaimer, I do not recommend the use of a virus attack as retribution for a wrong, although I would profit from the act)!

Create or store a virus, 3 years in jail....good idea

However, it's only in Japan.  A new law was passed aimed at those with the goal of making your life miserable.   If convicted of creating a virus or storing a virus for future destruction, you face up to 3 years in jail.  If only catching the offenders were a bit easier.

When to buy your new gadget

Try Decide.com.  This site collects data on new tv's, computers and digital cameras and advises you on the best time to buy, if at all, the device.  Based on historical tracking information on products, the site can advise you to hold off buying a certain device because it is due to drop in price shortly or to not buy it at all.  For a recent customer, I wish this site was available a couple of years ago.  He purchased a laptop that was made with a defective video chip and now is a brick, as the warranty has expired and HP has resisted all efforts to make the computer right.

2 Days later with Google Music

The review will still have to wait, still uploading songs, 2 DAYS later.  At 5100 or 8400 songs uploaded.  Consider that I am running a Verizon FIOS connection speed of 15MBps down and 5MBps up, this is going to be painful for all of you on DSL or slower FIOS speeds.  Maybe everything will be uploaded by the end of the weekend.  Will get back to you...
